About this work
A long white building with two symmetrical wings and an arched ground-floor colonnade stands at the center, flanked by taller ochre townhouses and slender spires receding into the haze. The still water in the foreground carries an inverted reflection of the whole row of facades, doubling the composition.
Despite the title, the light is soft and overcast rather than bright, the palette built from warm ochre-yellow set against cool grey-blue shadow. Thick impasto and scraped passages give the surface a weathered, plaster-like texture, and the muted, hazy atmosphere lends the scene a quiet, contemplative stillness rather than sunlit warmth.
