About this work

A trio of past-bloom sunflowers, their petals curling and browned, leans out of a narrow dark red vase set on a bare tabletop. One flower head faces the viewer with a heavy seeded center, another hangs sideways, and a third has withered to a dry, curled disc at the top of a bent stem.

A muted, earthy palette of ochre, umber and grey unifies the flowers with the textured, dry-brushed wall behind them, while a single fallen petal and small red berry rest on the ledge below. The subdued light and drooping forms give the still life a quiet, melancholic sense of fading.
