About this work
Two nude classical female statues stand on stone pedestals in the foreground, framing a paved path that leads to a scalloped fountain pool with multiple jets of water. More statues ring the pool's edge, and a domed, pillared pavilion is visible through a screen of trees beyond, where small figures - a seated couple, children - move in the dappled shade.
Greens of the surrounding foliage are broken by patches of golden light and rose-toned shadow across the path and statues. Brushwork is loose and built up with visible impasto. Low, late-day sun filters through the canopy, dappling the ground with warm color, giving the formal garden a nostalgic, softly glowing calm at day's end.
