About this work
A single head fills the canvas, modeled with thick ridges of paint into deep-set eyes, a furrowed brow, and a heavy, downturned mouth framed by hollow cheeks. The features are built up rather than drawn, giving the face a sculptural, mask-like weight. The background is left bare and pale, throwing the dark head into sharp relief.
Color is limited to somber greens, ochres and near-blacks, laid on in coarse, knife-like strokes that pile up into a rough crust. Light catches the ridged surface unevenly, deepening the eye sockets and mouth into near-black hollows. The raw, gestural handling and restricted palette produce a heavy, tragic gravity, matching the anguished expression of the sculpture it studies.
