About this work
Successive rows of waves break across nearly the entire canvas, their dark green-grey bodies capped with heavy white foam. A narrow band of wet sand appears only at the bottom, beneath a flat, hazy horizon near the top. No boats, figures, or landmarks appear; the whole composition is given over to the churn of the sea.
Deep blue-greens and slate greys dominate the water, built up with thick, choppy strokes that mimic the broken texture of the waves, while opaque white is dragged on to render foam and spray. Brushwork grows looser toward the center, where the waves seem to collide. The heavy, textured surface and restless rhythm create a tense, dramatic mood.
