About this work
Three tall ewers with long curved spouts and hinged lids stand in a row, one in worn tin-plated metal, two in polished brass, behind a shallow bowl piled with grapes, dark plums, peaches, a halved pomegranate and a whole one, and a bright yellow lemon; a separate apple and loose grapes lie on the wooden tabletop in front.
Painted against a plain pale wall, the composition balances the cool sheen of tin against the warm glow of brass, both catching soft, even light that models their dented, embossed surfaces in fine detail. The fruit is rendered with glossy highlights and rich color, purple, gold, red and yellow, against the muted metal and wood, giving the arrangement a warm, orderly abundance.
