About this work
A cluster of dark, spent sunflower heads rises from a white enamel mug at the centre of the composition, stems crossing in front of a pale grey wall. Beside it stands a light-blue enamel pitcher, and to the left a shallow basket with orange-brown contents completes the grouping on a dark tabletop.
Muted greys, blues and burnt umber dominate the palette, with the flower heads rendered in deep maroon and ochre rather than bright petals. Paint is laid on in flat, simplified shapes with little blending, and the even light gives the grouping a subdued, quiet mood.
