About this work
Whole, glossy pomegranates surround one cut open to spill red seeds onto a white plate, beside a cluster of dark grapes and a tall green glass jug with a curved handle. More pomegranates rest on the cloth-draped table, set against a softly blurred, richly patterned wall hanging.
Thick, confident strokes of orange, crimson and green build the fruit with strong highlights, while the backdrop pattern is suggested through loose touches of blue, gold and violet. Warm light from the left picks out the pomegranate skins and the jug's glass surface. The loose, painterly handling gives the still life a lively, tactile warmth.
