About this work
A white plaster head on a plinth stands among dried orange roses in a tall vase, a dark green bottle, a small black bottle and a clear glass carafe. In front, a yellow plate holds three white eggs, with a pale cloth draped over the table's edge; on the wall behind hang a small landscape picture and a plain red textured square panel.
Soft, even light models the plaster head's matte surface and the carafe's glassy highlights in a restrained palette of greys, ochres and muted greens, warmed by the roses' faded orange. Smooth, controlled brushwork and careful tonal gradation give the grouping the poised, deliberate feel of a traditional academic still-life study built around the classic plaster cast motif.
