About this work
An Eastern-style copper ewer with a curved spout and hinged lid stands centrally, flanked by a tall pewter jug and a brass pitcher tipped on its side in the foreground. To the right a large dried pale squash rests against an upright decorative plate, with a small snail shell nearby. Two keys hang pinned above on the wall.
Warm ochre and buff tones fill the mottled plaster backdrop, set against the cool grey-blue metal of the jugs and burnished amber brass. Raking light from the upper left casts soft shadows behind the vessels, while thick, confident brushwork renders crisp metallic highlights over a loosely scumbled wall, giving the grouping a warm, quiet, contemplative mood.
