About this work
A tall stoneware pitcher holds a spray of dried poppy seed heads on curling stems, set on a table crowded with objects: a wicker-wrapped demijohn, a green glass bottle stopped with a cork, a small orange pumpkin, bulbs of garlic, a lidded copper pot, and two woven baskets draped with cloth. Behind them a patterned red-and-black kilim rug fills the background.
Deep reds, browns, and blacks dominate the palette, with light falling in a narrow diagonal band across the pumpkin, garlic, and pitcher to pick out their textures against the surrounding shadow. Glossy highlights on the glass and ceramic contrast with the matte weave of the baskets and rug, producing a warm, hushed stillness typical of traditional still-life painting.
