About this work
The composition looks along a stone quay toward a pedestrian bridge, its cables anchored by a pair of dark, green-patinated lion statues set on granite pedestals in the foreground. Beyond the bridge rise a yellow colonnaded building with an arched gateway, an ochre apartment block, and rows of trees, with a second lion pedestal visible across the water on the far bank.
Loose, visible brushwork in oil renders the scene in cool greys and blues for the sky and stonework, set against warm ochre and green passages in the architecture and foliage. Diagonal shadows cross the quay in the foreground, and the sketch-like handling gives the cityscape an immediate, open-air freshness.
