About this work
The composition looks outward through a massive, deeply carved stone gateway decorated with rosette medallions and an ornamental khachkar cross mounted on the left pier. Beyond the dark arch, in bright sunlight, stands a conical-domed stone church with round-arched galleries, a small courtyard of clipped hedges, and a cross-stone marker near its entrance, all set against a clear blue sky.
The scene is built on a sharp contrast between the cool brown shadow of the foreground archway and the sunlit ochre stone of the church beyond, drawing the eye through the frame like a window. Carved details on the arch are rendered with graphic precision, while the distant building is more loosely brushed, producing a calm, sunstruck stillness.
