About this work
A tall haloed figure in a red cloak over dark blue-and-gold armor stands centrally on a small mound, holding a cross-topped staff in one hand and a large red shield bearing a golden griffin in the other. Four smaller arched scenes fill the corners: a walled town with boats and riders, a fiery battle beneath a red banner, a snowy sledge and chapel interior, and a robed procession before a church.
Rendered in flat, iconlike planes of red, black, ochre and cream against a granular gold-white ground, the panel uses hieratic scale and stylized drawing rather than naturalistic modeling. The palette is bold and decorative, the mood solemn and devotional, evoking traditional icon painting.
