About this work

A cluster of industrial brick buildings with large multi-pane windows, a low arched roof on the right, and a tall red chimney fills the middle distance under a clear pale-blue sky. In the foreground, dark water is broken by angular white shards of drifting ice, rendered as flat triangular shapes across the canal's surface.

The palette contrasts weathered brick reds and browns with cool blue sky and near-black water, the brickwork built up in dry, scumbled strokes that suggest grime and age. The crisp, faceted ice shapes are painted with hard edges, almost graphic in their flatness, giving the industrial scene a quiet feeling of a cold morning turning toward spring.
