About this work
Long diagonal bands of cloud fan across the upper sky, their undersides lit pink and gold by a low sun. Below, dark wooded banks frame a wide, calm estuary that mirrors the sky's colors and cloud pattern almost exactly, with a bright point on the horizon marking the sun itself and small patches of marsh grass breaking the water.
Saturated turquoise, violet, and warm orange dominate the palette, applied in smooth, blended passages that stress the sky's radiating structure. The near-perfect symmetry between sky and reflection gives the image a decorative, almost graphic rhythm, and the low viewpoint makes for an intense, theatrical vision of sunset.
