About this work
A woman with a mass of curling auburn hair, flowers woven through it, stands in profile holding an ornately framed hand mirror up to her own face. She wears a dark robe patterned with pomegranates and vines. Behind her a pale ruined aqueduct crosses a wooded valley, with an arched stone gateway further back; cursive verse on aging and beauty is inscribed across the top of the canvas.
The palette is muted ivory, ochre and umber, warmed by touches of coral in the hair ornaments and robe pattern. Fine, almost embroidered brushwork builds the textile and foliage into a dense, tapestry-like surface, while the face and hands are modeled more smoothly. The mood is quietly reflective, pairing painted illusion with the mirror's reflected image.
