About this work
A nude figure lies stretched face-down across a rock, one arm extended toward a large round shield where several snakes coil on the ground. Beside the figure a boar rests its head nearby, while an elderly bearded man in a hooded robe stands over the scene holding a staff entwined with two snakes; a third cloaked figure sits at right, holding a tablet.
Rendered in charcoal with heavy, deliberate shading, drapery and animal fur are built from dense cross-hatching while the reaching figure's body stays comparatively smooth and pale. The composition is dark and dense, tonal contrast concentrating the eye on the staff and snake-ringed shield. The mood is solemn and charged, heavy with ritual significance.
