About this work
The skull faces the viewer head-on, its symmetrical eye sockets, nasal cavity and set teeth centered on the sheet above a small wooden base; a supplementary pencil sketch of the cranium seen from above is added in the lower corner.
Built up through dense graphite cross-hatching, the drawing balances the pale dome of the forehead against darker recesses of the eye sockets and jaw, an exacting academic study of symmetry and bone form.
