About this work

The canvas isolates the lower half of a man's face - nose, stubbled jaw, and closed mouth - his own hand raised so that four fingers press lightly across his lips. He wears a dark blue turtleneck, and both figure and background dissolve into flat black, leaving only the illuminated hand and face as the visual field.

The face and hand are rendered in warm, creamy realism, with careful gradation from pale highlight along the knuckles into blue-tinged shadow at the jaw; the sweater and inky ground are painted almost featureless to keep attention on the gesture. Smooth, restrained brushwork and stark tonal contrast give the image a hushed, contemplative stillness.
