About this work
A bearded old man in a dark vest and cap kneels over a sheep laid on a cloth, working hand shears through its fleece. Behind him a young boy in green cradles a large sheared fleece in his arms, and a woven basket for the wool sits at the shearer's side. A crowded flock of sheep presses in from both sides inside a rough timber barn.
Warm browns and creams fill the palette, with soft golden light spilling through gaps in the roof to backlight the boy's raw wool. Detailed, academic brushwork renders weathered hands, coarse fleece and animal faces with equal care, producing a calm, unhurried sense of everyday rural labor.
