About this work
The composition is filled entirely with thick, sculptural folds of cloth rendered in shades of grey and sepia; a clenched hand emerges from the drapery at center, fingers curled, while a second, open hand lies relaxed at lower right, palm turned upward against a paint-dripped fold of fabric.
The surface is built in horizontal bands, as if photographed or printed in overlapping strips, giving the drapery a subtly fractured, layered texture beneath its otherwise smooth tonal modeling. Thin runs of dried paint trail down from the folds at lower left, and the restrained monochrome palette combined with the close, cropped framing lends the study a somber, meditative stillness.
