About this work
A man with dark, tousled hair is shown half-length, turned slightly to one side with his head facing the viewer, wearing a loose, open-collared shirt in dark blue and maroon tones. Behind him a wooden bookshelf holds rows of books with brightly coloured spines, and a pale wall or door edge closes the composition on the right.
Warm flesh tones are modeled with visible, energetic brushstrokes against the cooler blue-violet of the shirt, and the book spines supply small, staccato notes of red, ochre and blue in an otherwise subdued interior. The direct, level gaze and firmly built forms give the portrait a frank, searching presence.
