About this work
A woman in a paint-stained smock stands beneath the steeply angled glass roof of a studio, its wooden beams crossing in sharp diagonals overhead. To her right, canvases and an easel crowd the space, while diffuse daylight falls through the skylight panes. She faces the viewer directly, her expression calm and appraising.
Cool blue-greens and slate grays dominate, broken by ochre wood tones and touches of green in her clothing. Paint is built up in thick, faceted strokes that fracture the glass roof into overlapping shards of light. The handling is loose and structural rather than descriptive, giving the scene a quiet, searching, contemplative stillness.
