About this work
A head-and-shoulders self-portrait of a young woman with tousled, sandy-brown hair falling loosely around her face. She turns her head slightly, one bare shoulder exposed, staring directly out of the canvas with a serious, unflinching expression. The background and clothing are left as broad unresolved strokes, giving the impression of a work still in progress around the more finished face.
The palette is restrained - ochre, sienna, mauve and grey-green - applied in broad, loaded strokes with visible brush marks and scraped passages of raw canvas. Light falls softly across the forehead and cheek while the eyes and mouth are built with a few decisive dark accents. The rapid, unblended handling gives the image an immediate, searching quality.
