About this work
A head and shoulders study shows the sitter with eyes lowered or closed, chin tucked toward the chest, rendered against a bare paper ground scored with loose diagonal hatching. The collar of a shirt is indicated with a few broad strokes below the jaw.
Worked in charcoal on paper, the drawing builds form through smudged tonal blocks and scratchy linear accents rather than continuous outline, leaving the paper itself as the lightest value. Heavy shadow masses the hair and cheek while the far side of the face dissolves into the toned ground, giving the study a brooding, unfinished immediacy.
