About this work
Three angular, pastel-toned figures crowd into a small boat: a man raises a brass spyglass to his eye while a woman and a second man look on. A coiled rope, an anchor and a folded paper boat lie at their feet, a pale flag billowing behind them against a blue sky.
Forms are flattened into cubist-like planes, faces built from simplified pink and grey shapes with heavy outlines. The palette stays within cool blues and warm flesh tones, giving the scene a toylike lightness. Smooth brushwork and the absent horizon turn the picture into a playful, buoyant seafaring tableau.
