About this work

Seen from behind, a woman in a pale headscarf and loose mint-green dress stands at the water's edge, arms crossed behind her back. Ahead of her, a flock of seagulls perches and wades among half-submerged boulders scattered across a shallow bay, one gull caught mid-flight at the upper edge of the canvas.

The scene is built from broad, loaded strokes of lavender-blue, grey and pale green, with the water rendered as a shifting field of cool reflected light. Brushwork is loose and gestural, leaving the figure's form summarized rather than detailed, and the overall tonality gives the beach a hushed, overcast calm.
