About this work

A large pair of open scissors lies diagonally across a torn seascape, its blades seeming to slice the image into ragged shards on a dark rust-toned ground. Within the fragments a barefoot man in a grey shirt stands beside a dog on a rocky shore, while a separate torn strip shows a nude woman walking near the water.

Cool blue-grey tones of sea and stone contrast with the warm oxidized red-brown surrounding them, and the scissors are painted in hard black-green metal with sharp highlights against the soft, broken brushwork of the landscape. Chalky, textured strokes give the water an atmospheric softness, and the pairing of an ordinary tool with a dissolving scene feels quietly unsettling and dreamlike.
