About this work
A smooth, sculpture-like head fills the canvas frontally, its features simplified almost to marble, while a pair of outstretched wings lies horizontally across the face exactly where the eyes would be, replacing sight with feathers. Faint orange, scorch-like marks glow beneath the wings at the bridge of the nose and cheeks, and loose, scribbled dark strokes frame the head like a smoky halo.
Cool greys and whites model the face with careful, blended shading, while the wings are built from drier, more textured strokes of ochre and brown. The stark contrast between the serene, classical face and the violent orange burn beneath the wings gives the image a mysterious, unsettling symbolic charge.
