About this work

The composition looks across a wide quarry pit, its steep grey and ochre rock faces scored with vertical striations and capped along every ledge with snow. The far rim is lined with a dense row of fir trees and a few pale birches, set against a flat grey sky, with no figures or structures present.

Handled in a restrained range of greys, browns and whites, the rock is built with broad, angular, almost palette-knife strokes that emphasize its jagged structure, while the snow is laid in thicker pale patches. The muted, even light gives the whole scene a still, austere winter calm.
