Rotunda

Massive carved stone arches and columns, encrusted with baroque ornament, frame a distant domed rotunda that seems to float above a churning body of water; a small stone bridge and cascading waterfalls run beneath it. A winged sculpted figure leans from the architecture at left, a small statue stands atop a column further back, and pale sky is visible through the central opening.

Warm ochres, siennas and golds fill the foreground stonework, cooling to pale greys and blues in the distant architecture and clouds; thick, textured paint describes the carved reliefs and foaming water, while the background dissolves into softer, hazy strokes. The blend of crumbling grandeur and rushing water gives the scene a hushed, dreamlike sense of a flooded, half-imagined world.
