About this work
Seven or eight full-blown pink, blush, and deep red roses with their green leaves are gathered in a clear glass vase set on a light tabletop. The flowers fill the upper portion of the canvas while the vase and a sliver of table anchor the composition below, against a flat, undefined grey-blue background.
Thick, juicy strokes of impasto build each rose head from pink, coral, and touches of white, with darker green-black shadows defining the foliage. The loose, painterly handling and soft grey ground keep the focus on color and texture, giving the still life a relaxed, informal freshness.
