About this work
A canvas and leather backpack with buckled straps sits atop a battered metal-cornered travel trunk, its flap partly open. Beside it lie a yellow apple, a small round pale object and a piece of folded dark purple cloth. The trunk rests on a table covered with a pale blue cloth, set against a plain wall and a dark door.
Muted greys, browns and deep greens are built up in smooth, carefully blended strokes that render the worn leather, metal corners and woven canvas with close attention to texture. Soft, directional light falls from the left, modelling each object clearly and giving the grouping a contemplative calm suited to a journey paused.
