About this work
A pale, crouching figure with long dark hair and light drapery kneels in the foreground of a night forest, her form echoed by a faint reflection or shadow beneath her. Behind her, black tree trunks rise against a star-flecked sky, and two glowing red lantern-like shapes glimmer between the trunks, marking a distant house or gate.
The scene is painted almost entirely in blacks, browns and greys, with tiny flecks of white scattered like falling snow or stars across the dark canvas. Only the red lanterns and the pale figure break the somber tonal range, their glow and pallor creating a hushed, eerie sense of return through the night woods.
