About this work
A dark-haired woman in a light smock sits at a wooden restoration easel, leaning over an unseen panel with brushes and small jars of pigment in her hands. Behind her rise two large old icon paintings clamped upright: at center a tall panel showing a standing haloed figure with a raised hand and faded Church Slavonic inscriptions, and at left a fragment of another icon depicting a winged angel in a red robe.
Muted ochres, browns and dulled golds dominate the icons, contrasting with the cooler grey-blue of the restorer's clothing and the pale wall behind. Soft, even light and smooth brushwork keep attention on her focused hands and lowered gaze, lending the scene a quiet, concentrated, workshop stillness.
