About this work
Two nude women stand beside a marble column, one seen from behind gathering her hair, the other facing forward with eyes closed and a wreath in her dark hair, both arms raised overhead. A great sweep of orange fabric arcs across the top of the scene like a canopy caught by wind, while gulls skim a churning sky above a strip of sea.
Warm flesh tones sit against the cool blue-grey sky and deep russet drapery, lit hard from one side so bodies and cloth alike take on a glossy, sculptural finish. The contrast is theatrical and monumental, giving the scene the weight of a temple frieze caught between calm and storm.
