About this work
A grey-haired nude man cradles a smaller sleeping figure wrapped in embroidered cloth patterned with tiny buildings, both crowned with flowers. Around them stand pale onlookers with the heads of a goat, a horned bull and a wolf, plus a small winged figure overhead. Ripe apples and a pomegranate lie at their feet, with a line of stars along a low horizon.
The canvas is rendered in a single cold blue-white tonality, broken only by touches of pink and gold in the embroidered fabric. Thick, textured strokes model flesh and fur with a chalky, frozen finish, while fine detail is kept for the tiny figures on the cloth. The monochrome light and embrace give the image a hushed, dreamlike tenderness.
