About this work
A row of pedestrians moves along a city street beneath a line of open umbrellas in pink, red, teal, blue and violet. Behind them rises a facade of tall arched windows and doorways, dark openings alternating with pale grey stone on one side and warm ochre plaster on the other, culminating in a large arched passage at the right.
Loose, broken strokes of cool violet, grey and blue-black describe the wet pavement and shadowed stonework, while the umbrellas are laid in with thick, unmixed color that punctuates the muted street. The rapid, painterly handling and glinting highlights on the wet ground evoke the damp hush of a rainy afternoon crowd moving past shuttered facades.
