About this work
Pedestrians move along the wide stone quay of a Venetian waterfront, passing striped market stalls and awnings on the left and a bronze figure raised on a tall pedestal at the center. Ochre and rust-colored buildings line the promenade on the right, while across the water on the far horizon the pale dome of a church catches the light.
A soft grey-blue sky streaked with coral at the horizon sets a gentle, late-day tone, echoed in the warm ochre facades and cool shadowed pavement. Figures are suggested with quick, economical strokes, and the loose, fluid brushwork throughout gives the busy quay a calm, unhurried atmosphere.
