About this work

A cylindrical whitewashed stone tower with a steep conical roof dominates the composition, joined by a wooden covered gallery with a shingled roof and timber posts. Below, a thick defensive wall curves down toward a river, with a bush and distant riverside buildings visible at right.

Chalky white pigment is built up in thick, angular patches to render sunlit stone, set against cool grey-blue passages for sky and water. Dark umber accents define timber framing and cast shadows, giving the fortress architecture a solid, sun-bleached, almost sculptural presence.
