About this work
Viewed from an elevated rooftop, the composition looks down over a dense huddle of tiled and snow-dusted roofs toward a wide river crossed by a multi-arched stone bridge, with small figures visible on its span. A church spire anchors the lower left, and further arched bridges and hazy towers recede into the distance under an overcast sky.
The palette stays muted - grays, ochres and dull reds - with patches of snow picked out in white along the rooftops. Broad, loose strokes blur distant buildings into atmospheric haze while the bridge and foreground roofs are built with thicker, more defined touches, giving the cityscape a cool, wintry hush.
