About this work
A man in a white ruffled collar and dark coat looks out with a weary, fixed stare, his head pierced and bound by nailed wooden slats like a makeshift crown of thorns. Two winged, bearded cherub-masks float at the top corners; below, a nude woman cradles an infant at left while a putto holds a cloud-like puff at right.
The background is a dense mosaic of blue, green, orange and pink daubs, against which the sitter's pale, carefully modeled face and green glass buttons stand out with almost photographic clarity. The clash between the naturalistic portrait and its fantastical, symbol-laden surroundings gives the picture a brooding, enigmatic mood.
