About this work
A young man leans forward with one elbow propped on a red table, his chin resting on his knuckles while the other hand lies open in his lap. He wears an open navy jacket over a striped sweater in ochre, teal and cream. Beside him an open book shows a brightly colored abstract illustration, and the wall behind is covered in swirling red and orange spirals over deep blue.
Thick, visibly worked brushstrokes build the jacket in cobalt and indigo, contrasting with the flat ornamental pattern behind. The face and hands are modeled more naturalistically, in warm flesh tones, giving the sitter a direct, thoughtful gaze. The clash between decorative backdrop and solid form lends the portrait a restless, modern intensity.
