About this work
A young man with a short beard and moustache is shown in three-quarter view, his gaze directed downward and to the side. His head is wrapped in a heavy, loosely draped turban whose folds fall in broad diagonal creases, while the shoulders and chest are only lightly indicated below the neck.
Worked entirely in grey and black tones on warm toned paper, the drawing builds the face through careful cross-hatching and soft blending, with brighter highlights left in the paper's own tone on the turban's folds. The controlled, academic modelling gives the head a calm, studious presence.
