About this work
Five poppy blooms in various stages of opening - some flat and full-faced, one drooping - are shown close up against layered green and teal foliage, their long stems and buds threading through the leaves. No other objects or setting appear; the flowers fill almost the entire canvas.
Fiery orange and red petals are built from thick, directional strokes radiating from each dark, near-black center, set against cooler blue-green background dabs for contrast. The heavy impasto and bold color juxtaposition give the image an intense, almost blazing vibrancy.
