About this work
A pale-blue pitcher stands behind a footed bowl painted with a floral border, filled with dark plums and topped by an open pomegranate and a halved fig. In front, a second pomegranate is split to show its seeds, a fig lies at left with a bee on its skin, and a grey-blue bird perches at right among dried leaves.
Set against a deep maroon backdrop, the fruit is rendered in warm orange, dusty blue and soft pink with careful watercolor washes and fine dry-brush detail on skins and veins. The dense, ornamental arrangement gives the still life a calm, decorative poise.
