About this work
A wide canal curves past rows of ochre, red, and yellow apartment buildings crowned with a domed corner tower. An arched bridge with pedestrians crosses the water, and small figures line the embankment on the far side. In the foreground, an ornate cast-iron balustrade and bare-branched trees frame the view from a quiet vantage point.
Muted golds, rust, and pale blue-grays are laid in broad, textured strokes, with the facades built up in thick impasto highlights. The water carries soft rippled reflections of the architecture above, painted in loose vertical strokes. Cool early-spring light and bare branches give the scene a hushed, transitional atmosphere.
