About this work
A young woman crowned with a leafy wreath stands bare-chested on a rocky outcrop, one arm raised holding a carved staff. Around her a spotted fawn grazes at the rocks, a grey heron perches nearby, and a small blue flower grows at her feet; stylized birds, masks, and totem-like carvings fill the surrounding cliff and canopy.
Earthy greens, browns, and mossy greys are broken by patches of gold, rust, and deep blue, echoing the carved wooden frame's folk-ornament birds. Paint is applied thickly in flattened, faceted planes rather than naturalistic modeling, giving the scene a totemic, legend-like density and an air of old woodland myth.
