About this work
A cluster of full pink peonies with dark green foliage rises from a cream stoneware pitcher at the center of the composition. Around its base stand a dark green glass bottle, a pale green glass bottle, a stemmed glass dish of sugar cubes, a small white cup and saucer, and a taller white milk jug, all arranged on a plain tabletop against a two-toned sage and white wall.
The cool green and white surroundings set off the saturated pink and magenta of the flowers, painted with loose, textured strokes that suggest overlapping petals rather than describing each one. Light falls softly from the left, and the restrained, muted backdrop gives the bouquet a quiet, airy presence typical of a studio still life.
